Recognized by his peers as a visionary leader in thoracic oncology, Dr. Sandeep J. Khandhar is
the Director of Inova Health System's Thoracic Surgery Program and Chief of Thoracic Surgery
at Inova Fairfax Hospital. He is a fellowship trained cardiothoracic surgeon with advanced
training and expertise in video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), a minimally invasive
platform to treat lung cancer and other serious thoracic conditions.
The thoracic oncology program at Inova partners with experts in the community to offer a level
of expertise unparalleled in the Washington, DC region, with a focus on minimally invasive
techniques and a team of specialists dedicated to the unique complexities of lung cancer patients.
The team includes thoracic surgeons, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, pulmonologists,
radiologists, pathologists, anesthesiologists, nurses, and navigation support services. Inova's
multidisciplinary approach to their program has caught international attention; Dr. Khandhar's
research and surgical expertise has resulted in multiple national and international presentations and publications.
Dr. Khandhar earned a B.S. Degree in Biomedical Engineering and Medical Degree from
Northwestern University and completed his General Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery
Residencies at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. In addition, Dr.
Khandhar completed a Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery/Thoracic Oncology Fellowship at
Duke University Medical Center. He has been in Northern Virginia operating at Fairfax Hospital for the past 10 years.
